Zidane quits Real Madrid after row with Pérez over transfers

The hunt is on for Real Madrid's next coach and Michel Salgado sees no reason why his former teammate Guti, now in charge of the Merengues youth team, can not step into the hotseat.

The La Liga giants are seeking a replacement for Zinedine Zidane, who announced his shock resignation less than a week after leading Madrid to an unprecedented third consecutive Champions League title.

Real Murcia president Victor Galvez says his team were not able to appoint Guti as coach this summer as he is succeeding Zinedine Zidane at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium.

Los Blancos are also understood to have been knocked back by Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegrisince Zidane's surprise departure last week. "He was the coach I wanted here", Galvez said, as quoted by AS.

President Florentino Perez is reportedly keen for a coach with a similar profile to Zidane - a trainer who has played for the club. "Guti called me to thank me for our interest in him".

And former Real right-back Salgado believes Guti, now in charge of the Merengues youth team, can step into the hotseat vacated by the Frenchman.

Speaking about his former team-mate, Pires believes that it was the right time for Zidane to move on, leaving after achieving unheralded success. The players at Real Madrid will look up to Guti in a similar way, and with the coaching experience he has behind him with the under 19's, it should stand him in good stead going forward.
