133 killed, 200 injured in twin election-related blasts in Pakistan

At least 128 people, including Balochistan Awami Party leader Siraj Raisani, were killed and almost 200 others injured in a suicide attack in Balochistan on Friday.

The explosion killed Siraj Raisani, who was running for a provincial seat with the newly formed Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), provincial home minister Agha Umar Bungalzai told AFP. Another senior official, Qaim Lashari, also confirmed it was a suicide blast.

ISIS's AMAQ news agency provided no further detail or evidence for its claim.

Pakistan's caretaker government launched a crackdown on political gatherings on Friday as Sharif, who was ousted by the Supreme Court past year and convicted in absentia of corruption a week ago, flew back to rally his party ahead of the general elections.

More than 100 people were wounded in the suicide bomb attack at the election rally in the town of Mastung.

In a statement, the former president condemned the attack in which Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) candidate Nawabzada Siraj Raisani, his son and dozens of other political workers were killed and several others were injured.

Mr Raisani was the brother of the former Baluchistan chief minister, Aslam Raisani.

The explosion comes hours after four people were killed and 39 injured when a bomb hidden inside a motorcycle detonated near Akram Khan Durrani´s convoy in Bannu.

The injured were taken to District Headquarter (DHQ) Hospital Bannu for treatment, where officials confirmed the death toll had risen to four while 32 injured were undergoing treatment.

On July 7, seven people were injured when a convoy of a Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal came under attack in Bannu.

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari demanded that the security of contesting candidates be ensured.

Analysts warn however that Pakistan has yet to tackle the root causes of militancy.
