OH and PA: Salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey products

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday afternoon that it was working to pinpoint the origin of a foodborne outbreak which has so far sickened people across 26 states and led to at least 40 hospitalizations.

"Given that this outbreak has been continuing for nine months, it's still surprising that the USDA and CDC did not alert the public earlier so people would know to be especially careful with raw turkey", said Jean Halloran, director of food policy initiatives at Consumers Union, the advocacy division of Consumer Reports.

Some of the affected people reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from different locations.

It is unclear where the Salmonella outbreak is coming from, and the CDC said it is still looking into which supplier or type of raw turkey product is linked to the outbreak.

The CDC said, "Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that raw turkey products from a variety of sources are contaminated with Salmonella Reading and are making people sick".
