Chillal chose to see how long he could grow them, even though the Guinness Book of World Records didn't exist then.

He was first inspired to grow out nails on his left hand in 1952, when he was 16 years old, after a teacher berated him for accidentally breaking one of hers.

He said decades of dealing with the weight of his nails has left his hand permanently unable to open or move his fingers. The teacher said that Chillal would never understand the importance of what he had done because Chillal had never committed to anything. Due to years of growing his nails and their weight, his left hand is permanently handicapped; he can not open his hand from a closed position or flex his fingers.
