Indonesia hit by powerful aftershock days after 319 died in natural disaster

The death toll from a devastating quake on the Indonesian island of Lombok has risen above 160, an official said Thursday, as authorities urgently appealed for medicine, food and clean water for some 156,000 people displaced by the disaster.

The governor of the province that includes Lombok where the quake was centred, the military, the national search, and rescue agency and regent of North Lombok issued different death tolls that ranged from 226 to 381.

A Reuters witness said the latest quake sent people into the streets in panic and caused buildings to collapse.

Aid began reaching isolated areas of the Indonesian island struggling after a powerful natural disaster that killed more than 130 people as rescuers intensified efforts Wednesday to find those buried in the rubble.

BNPB's official death toll from Sunday's quake stood at 131 on Wednesday, although some Indonesian officials put the number at 347.
