M7.0 quake strikes off Indonesia's Lombok island, causes small tsunamis

It comes a week after a powerful 6.4-magnitude quake struck the popular Indonesian tourist destination, killing 14 people and injuring at least 162.

Latest reports from authorities said that at least 91 people had been killed in the latest natural disaster.

The natural disaster was mostly felt in Mataran, the capital of Lombok Island, prompting residents to flee their homes.

Tweets report about the major 7.1 earthquakes in Lombok that triggered widespread panic and a tsunami warning.

The US Geological Survey says the quake struck from ten kilometres below the earth's crust. The natural disaster was felt in Mataram (the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province) and Bima, and lesser shakes were felt in Denpasar, Kuta, Karangasam (in Bali) and in parts of East Java.

The 47-year-old posted an update after a quake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck, the second one to have hit following a series of quakes in Lombok on July 29. Officials are still searching for missing people among the rubble and estimate that the number of dead and injured persons will climb.

The latest tremor, the third in over a week, had a magnitude of 6.2, according to Indonesia's geological agency. A Reuters witness said the latest quake sent people into the streets in panic and caused buildings to collapse.

Witnesses said the quake woke up residents and tourists, who ran out of their hotels.

Garuda Indonesia vice president corporate secretary Hengki Heriandono said in a statement that he hoped the additional flights would help people wishing to leave Lombok for Bali. The warning was lifted later Sunday after only small waves were recorded.

Officials said more than 2,000 people had been evacuated from the three Gili islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, where fears of a tsunami spread among tourists.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) recorded the death toll from Lombok quake on Sunday, August 5, the toll had increased to 91 people.

Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his 10th-floor hotel room shook violently and walls cracked. "People filled the streets", said Michelle Lindsay, an Australian tourist.

Nugroho said authorities had deployed three ships to evacuate people.

"I think for a lot of people, in particular some of the other delegates there at the conference, they hadn't experienced an quake before and it was pretty terrifying and because we were at the top of the building it was shaking a lot, a lot of things falling over", he said.

Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Model Chrissy Teigen, who is also on holiday in Bali, described her shock at the incident in a series of tweets.

Indonesia sits on the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.
