Nunes secretly recorded at fundraiser: We have to protect Trump from Mueller

Nunes allegedly made the comments, which touch on Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Special Counsel Robert Mueller, at a private fundraiser last month for Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.). "If we do not keep the majority, all of this goes away".

Those priorities include pushing Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through Senate confirmation, and potentially making another run at impeaching Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Nunes, who heads the House Intelligence Committee, seems to explain the main reason Congress hasn't taken up the issue is due to timing and the upcoming midterm elections.

"I mean, we have to keep all these seats", Nunes added.

Nunes went so far as to say that "If [AG] Sessions won't unrecuse and Mueller won't clear the president, we're the only ones [who can protect Trump]". Nunes appeared to say at the meeting that it was important the GOP maintain control in Congress after the November election so that they continue to check on the Russian Federation probe.

McMorris Rodgers can be heard briefly interjecting into Nunes' discussion of potential impeachment proceedings, but hasn't said publicly that she would support removing Rosenstein.

The danger, he said, was holding up the judicial nomination, as "the Senate would have to drop everything they're doing and start to, and start with impeachment on Rosenstein, and then take the risk of not getting Kavanaugh confirmed".

Nunes also later talked about the upcoming November midterms and his concerns about keeping the Republican majority in the Senate and the House, all to keep Trump as president.

It's also worth noting that Mueller and Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein, who now oversees the investigation, are both Republicans who were highly respected across the board prior to the start of the investigation. Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan introduced a resolution to impeach Rosenstein in an escalation of long-standing tensions.

Iran's envoy at the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo said in an report published by The Guardian that the USA is making history not just by violating a United Nations Security Council resolution it voted for three years ago, but also by penalizing countries who stick to the same unanimous resolution, according to Khoshroo. Since Jeff Sessions is recused on the matter of the Russian Federation probe, the responsibility of deciding whether or not to fire Mueller, if Trump were to ask for this, falls to Rosenstein.

Nunes, who has been among the most vocal critics of Rosenstein and the Department of Justice (DOJ), reasoned to supporters that the impeachment process was "a bit complicated" because the Senate would have to deal with much of the fallout. "It's a matter of, it's a matter of timing".
