Ryanair strike brings misery to 70,000 holidaymakers as 400 flights cancelled

Ryanair has refused to issue a list of the flights cancelled, but The Times understands that at least 50 departures from the United Kingdom have been called off, with more than 250 cancelled in Ireland.

It is the fifth such day of action in Ireland, where 20 flights have been cancelled.

Ryanair called the demands "pointless", and posted details of how much the cabin crew earn and said they receive an annual uniform allowance of €400.

Customers were notified as early as possible and a majority of those affected had already been moved to another Ryanair flight, the airline added.

Ryanair passengers claimed they faced chaos during a 24-hour strike which left British travellers stranded across Europe.

Which? travel editor Rory Boland said the dispute resolution service used by Ryanair had already confirmed it would uphold a previous European ruling that crew strikes are not usually considered "extraordinary circumstances".

But Ryanair insisted in a statement that 'there will be no cancellations (of flights to and from the Netherlands) as a result of the unnecessary strike action by the Dutch pilot union'.

The trade union Cockpit said 480 Germany-based pilots were not expected to return to work until 2.59 a.m. Saturday.

The airline in recent days announced the cancellations of 250 flights in and out Germany, 104 to and from Belgium and another 42 affecting Sweden and Ireland.

"If this isn't available on the same or next day then we will accommodate you to your end destination on airlines with whom we have a reciprocal agreement".

The company is eyeing profits of around €1.25bn this year, and boasts lower costs per passenger than its competitors.

The unions want the contracts of Ryanair employees to be governed by the laws of the nation where they are based, not by Irish legislation.

The Spanish pilots' union - which represents around 500 of the 800 Ryanair pilots in Spain - says it is going to sue the airline after a year of failed talks.

But its combative chief executive Michael O'Leary has also warned the airline may shift jobs and planes to more profitable areas if the turmoil continues.

Since the it first recognised unions in December 2017, walkouts have been staged multiple times by Ryanair staff in various countries.
