Samsung is Making 4TB SSDs Cheaper for Everyone

You can get a ton of storage for your new laptop - but you'll probably have to pay an arm and a leg for it. Putting a 4TB SSD in the new MacBook Pro immediately adds $3,200 to the cost, for example.

The new 2.5-inch SATA 3 drives are built using Samsung's new 64-layer 1Tb 4-bit V-NAND chips.

But Samsung's new line of SSDs might change that.

A New Planet that Does not Orbit any Star has been Discovered
Brown dwarfs have long baffled experts because they're too big to be considered planets but are not big enough to be stars. Though it was first detected in 2016, scientists initially identified it as one of five recently discovered brown dwarfs.

Storing more bits per cell in QLC drives inevitably means lower performance and endurance when compared to TLC, but Samsung claims it has managed to maintain the performance level of existing TLC drives. The firm credits this to a 3-bit SSD controller and TurboWrite technology, allowing it to achieve unprecedented read and write speeds of up to 540MB/s and 520MB/s, respectively despite its higher bit count.

Typically, as data stored within a memory cell increases from three bits to four, the chip capacity per unit area would rise and the electrical charge (used to determine information from a sensor) would decrease by as much as 50%, making it considerably more hard to maintain a device's desired performance and speed. Once this has flooded the market, Samsung promises that 1TB SSDs will become much more affordable as a result.

'Samsung's new 4-bit SATA SSD will herald a massive move to terabyte-SSDs for consumers, ' predicts Samsung's Jaesoo Han of the impending launch.

Chinese exports accelerate as fresh U.S. tariffs loom
A U.S. -China trade war will reduce global output by 0.7 per cent by 2020, with China's economy taking a 1.3 per cent hit and U.S. China's exports soared in July, showing little impact from U.S. tariffs, as Washington finalises more duties on Chinese imports.

The company also expects to provide M.2 NVMe SSDs for enterprises and start mass production of 4-bit 5th-generation V-NAND.

Designed for personal use, the new storage drives, including 1TB and 2TB iterations, also come with a three-year warranty, alleviating reliability concerns. There will be a 4TB model at some point as well, though Intel has not yet announced pricing for it.

The Samsung 4TB 850 EVO SSD is now listed on Amazon.co.uk with a £1,399.99 retail price (albeit discounted to £999.99 at present).
