McCain died Saturday after battling Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

The two men who defeated McCain in his White House campaigns, Republican George W. Bush in 2000 and Democrat Barack Obama in 2008, are expected to deliver eulogies at a Saturday service at the National Cathedral in Washington.

The veteran actor and filmmaker will help to carry the coffin alongside a host of American political heavyweights, including ex-vice president Joe Biden and former mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg.

McCain served six terms in Senate and endured torture as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Flags atop the two buildings were down at half mast after the senator's passing on Saturday and stayed so through Sunday as the country mourned a war-hero who suffered five and half years of torture during the Vietnam War, served six terms in the United States senate and ran twice for president.

The White House flag is flying at half mast once again, following complaints it wasn't left in this position for long enough after the death of Senator John McCain.

In the years since, McCain was Trump's loudest Republican critic, especially as the president disrupted America's long-time alliances.

"I have asked Vice President Mike Pence to offer an address at the ceremony honoring Senator McCain at the United States Capitol this Friday", Trump said, adding that with McCain's family's approval, he ordered the military transportation of the longtime Arizona senator's remains from his home state to Washington.

In the statement, McCain reflected on the privilege of serving his country and said he tried to do so honorably.

"My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain", Trump tweeted.

Mr Trump has now repeated this honour for Mr McCain, saying this recognised the "longstanding service" he had given.

"The damage inflicted by President Trump's naiveté, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is hard to calculate", McCain said at the time. "But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake". The tributes singled out McCain's military service and heroism as a POW and his independence as a political leader. Soon after his death, former presidents, lawmakers, and others all issued statements praising McCain's accomplishments.

Outside the United States, world leaders lauded McCain's role and presence overseas. He had an entire career, an entire life, before Trump took office past year.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said McCain "embodied the idea of service over self".

Pham Binh Minh wrote in a condolence book at the USA embassy in Hanoi that the politician was a "symbol of his generation" who helped "heal the wounds of war".

In death, McCain attempted a last word in his farewell letter.
