Wake Forest assistant basketball coach charged with assaulting tourist

Wake Forest assistant men's basketball coach Jamill Jones has been arrested and charged with third-degree assault in connection with the death of a 35-year-old Florida man who was in New York City for a wedding. He was arrested Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, and charged with assault.

Jamill Jones, 35, is accused of punching a tourist in the face, who later died.

He died in an area hospital on Tuesday.

Jones punched the victim after he knocked on the window of Jones' vehicle.

The coach got out, followed Szabo to the sidewalk, clocked him and sped off, police said.

Wake Forest basketball spokesman Steve Kirkland emailed a statement to The News & Observer Thursday night that said, "We have just been made aware of this matter and we are gathering information".

Jones was released on his own recognizance and ordered to return to court October 2.

"It's an unfortunate and tragic incident", Jones' attorney, Alain Massena, told ESPN.

According to Jones's bio at Wake Forest's sports website, he is a Philadelphia native who attended Arkansas Tech and began his basketball coaching career in Washington, D.C., with an AAU squad named Team Takeover.

As an assistant coach at Wake Forest, Jones joined the staff in May 2017.

Wake Forest has not responded to the Daily News' request for comment. "Sandor was super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman", his company, What If Media, said in a Facebook post Wednesday. His family says he was visiting NY from Boca Raton for a wedding. "He was a really good person".

Police say Jones confronted Sandor Szabo on a Queens street around 1:15 a.m. Sunday. "We are going to miss him dearly".
