After all, all they have to do is go, stop and steer, right? Recently, BMW Motorrad released footage of its self-driving R1200GS bike which is moving on a test track.

BMW hopes the program will in the future greatly assist bikers by operating as an autonomous driving assistant that adjusts steering during unsafe situations on the road.

Commenting on the unveiling, BMW project leader Stefan Hans said: "The prototype helps us expand our knowledge about the vehicle's dynamics, so we can classify the rider's behaviour and see if a future situation will become risky or not".

With technological advances taking place in the automotive world, including assisted driving and autonomous driving, it is still very rare to see it on motorcycles.

More details on the BMW technologies shown at the Motorrad Techday can be found in the document attached below. The bike will be used to develop new safety systems aimed at supporting inattentive drivers.

BMW claim they are by no means aiming for a completely independent motorcycle. Rather, the underlying technology should serve as a platform for development of future systems and functions to make motorcycling safer, more comfortable and improve riding pleasure.

With the goal of maximum innovation and highest possible quality, BMW Motorrad and BMW Automobile have a close alliance in this field too, where this material has always been used in series production. Here's to trusting BMW and other, less premium brands can acquire the innovation to the motorcycle in the near future.
