China protests as United States imposes sanctions over Russian arms deal

China is expressing outrage over US sanctions against a Chinese military agency and its director over the purchase of Russian weapons.

"We strongly urge the USA to immediately correct their mistake and withdraw their so-called sanctions, otherwise the U.S. will have to bear the consequences".

Beijing on Friday urged the United States to withdraw sanctions or "bear the consequences". CGTN'S Jim Spellman has this report. "We strongly call on the U.S.to remedy the mistake and cancel the sanctions".

China's Defence Ministry said in a statement it would recall navy chief Shen Jinlong from a visit to the United States and postpone planned talks in Beijing between Chinese and US military officials that had been set for next week.

However, a politician in Moscow said the sanctions would not affect Russian sales of military weapons to other countries. Under the sanctions law, China's Equipment Development Department, along with its chief Li Shangfu, will be prohibited from accessing the U.S. financial system and any assets they hold in the United States will be frozen.
