Dallas Cop Kills Botham Shem Jean After Mistakenly Entering His Apartment

The scion of a prominent Caribbean family was shot to death by a Dallas police officer Thursday night, after that officer mistakenly entered his apartment thinking it was her own.

A vigil has been organized this evening by Mothers Against Police Brutality outside Dallas Police Headquarters at 7 p.m. When authorities arrived she told them she believed her neighbor's apartment was her own.

Jeffrey Scherzer, who lives at the complex, said when he returned home late at night an officer escorted him to his apartment and warned him to steer clear of a blood trail. After the officer shot Jean, she called 911. She added that "as we continued the investigation it became clear that we were dealing with what appears to be a very unique situation".

Jean was a graduate of Harding University in Arkansas and worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Dallas Morning News reports.

According to a news release , preliminary information suggested that the officer came home in uniform after working a full shift. When asked if anyone else had witnessed the shooting, Warren replied, 'We have not spoken to anyone else at this time'.

Following the shooting, Earl Jean, Jean's uncle, paid tribute to the man Friday morning on Facebook. She was confronted by a man, identified by the Medical examiner's office as Botham Shem Jean. The police department said she will be placed on administrative leave while an investigation is completed.

Residents of the apartment complex said they can access their units with a regular key or through a keypad code.

The Dallas police chief says it remains unclear whether there were any words exchanged or any other interaction between a police officer and her neighbour before she fatally shot him in his home. "Therefore, we have ceased handling it under our normal officer-involved shooting protocol". She said the officer hadn't yet been questioned.

"I jumped up, went to my door, looked out the peephole". "We understand the concern of this community".
