False outrage? Hue Jackson now lists Josh Gordon as starter

Josh Gordon, arguably one of the most talented receivers in the game - when he's allowed to play - played 69 snaps against the Steelers but was targeted just 3 times and had 4 footballs thrown in his general direction in the 21-21 tie.

Gordon did make a leaping touchdown catch in the fourth quarter to tie it 21-all in the fourth quarter, but Taylor missed a chance to connect with the receiver late in regulation - a blown opportunity on a wet field that could have given the Browns their first victory since 2016. He did add 77 yards and a touchdown as he did all he could to keep the Browns in the game.

With Gordon solidified in the starting lineup, he will be a constant threat for opposing defenses. I felt my feet get down. "Josh, when he's going like we know he can, he has an opportunity to make plays".

"He's the quarterback", coach Hue Jackson said Monday regarding Taylor.

"The biggest jump for most teams is after that first week", Gordon said before Wednesday's practice, "and for us, we've got to take off in a big way."

Taylor and the Browns will look to get things back on track when they take on the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, and in order for the offense to be more successful, Jackson knows it will take a complete effort from all 11 players. To a certain extent, Jackson said, that starts with getting Gordon and the Browns' playmakers the ball more.

Confusion arose because Gordon had missed a good part of training camp and preseason as part of his treatment for substance abuse.

"Got to throw it further", Jackson said.

Jackson said the Browns are sticking with undrafted rookie Desmond Harrison at left tackle despite his struggles in the opener. Taylor found Rashard Higgins for a 38-yard pass down the right flank on the first play of the drive to set up a 1st and 10 on the Pittsburgh 17-yard-line. But on Cleveland's first play, Gordon lined up wide in a three-tight end personnel package.

"He was able to play through it in the game, but we'll see how it responds", Jackson said. "I did some good things, but I feel like I could have done more. You learn from the game, and you see where you can try to attack and exploit some of those areas, as well".

What PFF doesn't take into account is the weather that took place in Cleveland. "I think in the National Football League, that's the biggest jump for most teams - after that first week".

NOTES: Saints star quarterback Drew Brees said Browns rookie QB Baker Mayfield "can be a lot better than me. I have to get back to my mechanics and get better at those". He's got all the tools. "He has to do his job better". But, said Jackson, "I don't think it's the ankle sprain that lasts six weeks or whatever that is".
