FLORENCE: Landfall expected Friday morning, inland flooding a threat

Hurricane Florence began to inundate Frisco in North Carolina's Outer Banks on September 13. "It's something we haven't seen. ever".

The family is hoping for the best, given the potential threats the hurricane poses to lives and properties. Florence is a large hurricane. Also, the hurricane-force winds and tropical storm-force winds have been expanding.

It was forecast to make landfall mid-day Friday near Cape Fear, North Carolina, bringing up to 40 inches (1 metre) of rain, and storm surges as high as 13 feet (4 meters), the NHC said. It's now predicted to move west across SC, where the fallout will likely hit the Carolina coast on Thursday night or early Friday.

Over the weekend, remnants of Florence, are expected to move up the Appalachians. Showers and storms will increase in activity as the day progresses.

The main concerns for us from Florence will be moderately heavy rainfall, which will cause flooded roadways, strong gusty winds, coastal flooding, moderate potential for downed trees and widespread power outages, and unsafe travel conditions. We will feel the impacts even if the track has shifted southward. That system is moving very slowly, causing a lot of devastation.

Scattered storms continue through much of next week. Areas further from the coast could see 6-12in of rain. "My message today: Don't relax".

Authorities are warning US coastal residents in the path of Hurricane Florence to evacuate now or be at the mercy of the Category 3 storm, which is expected to slow upon hitting the coast of the Carolinas on Thursday and ravage the region with storm surge, rainfall, and flooding.

A slow motion across portions of eastern SC is forecast Friday night through Saturday night.Data from the aircraft and Doppler weather radars indicate that maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 105 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Forecasters say it could slow dramatically when it nears land and then linger until Saturday, moving unpredictably along the coast and bringing torrential rain.

North Carolina's Emergency Management tweeted that more than 154,000 homes were already without electricity by late Thursday. The few cars out on a main street in Wilmington had to swerve to avoid fallen trees, metal debris and power lines.

U.S. Rep. George Holding, of Raleigh, told FOX Business Channel Thursday that Florence could leave parts of North Carolina without power into October.
