It's well-known among southerners that if the 24/7/365 restaurants ever close, real danger is afoot, and in advance of Hurricane Florence's landfall, at least two locations - in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Morehead, North Carolina - have closed. "Because Waffle House is well-prepared for disasters... it's rare for the index to hit red".
According to a FEMA blog post, former FEMA administrator W. Craig Fugate decided that Waffle House was worth of its own Index that could be monitored to find out how individual communities were doing in the midst of a threatening storm.
Hungary to mount legal challenge to 'invalid' EU vote
It is the first time that the Parliament launches the so-called "nuclear option" against a member state. The Hungarian prime minister received harsh criticism, even within his own political family.
One restaurant that nearly never closes or is hurt by storms, however, is Waffle House. If there were a Waffle House in London during The Blitz that bad boy would have been taking orders for steak and eggs in between bursts of anti-aircraft fire.
As Hurricane Florence nears, FEMA will be keeping a close eye on the Waffle House - the fast-food restaurant chain known for staying open 24 hours a day every day of the year. But did you know they're also ranked by something called the Waffle House Index? In fact, the Waffle House is so hard to close down that FEMA uses a scale based on Waffle House closures to tell just how bad a hurricane and its aftermath actually are.
The restaurant chain posted a photo this week on social media of employees tracking the storm, writing, "The @WaffleHouse Storm Center is activated and monitoring #Florence". Waffle House has 230 restaurants along the coast of the Carolinas and many more inland. EHS Today explains that the Waffle House Index runs on a color-coded system. We call it red. "Within the occasion that they're green, we're correct, defend going".
Osaka not saddened by Serena row in US Open final
Williams smashed her racquet, breaking it, bringing about her second violation for racquet abuse, resulting in a point penalty. It defended Ramos in a statement on Monday: " Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis".
But what about when Waffle House is open with a limited menu?
For those in directly affected areas, be it first responders or residents who didn't evacuate, the turned on lights and running kitchen stoves of Waffle House often represent a sense of calmness and relief during the most stressful of times. You can't make this stuff up, and that's just a lot of pressure to put on a place that sells waffles. "The sooner restaurants, grocery and corner stores, or banks can reopen, the sooner local economies will start generating revenue again - signaling a stronger recovery for that community".
A representative for Waffle House did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.
