Off-duty Texas police officer shoots man after mistaking apartment as her own

- An off-duty Dallas police officer shot and killed a man after walking into the wrong apartment in her building just south of Downtown Dallas.

According to a news release, preliminary information suggested that the officer came home in uniform after working a full shift.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall held a press conference Friday where she identified the victim as Botham Shem Jean, they will not identify the officer until she is officially charged. She called dispatch to report that she had shot a man, and she later told the officers who responded that she believed the victim's apartment was her own when she entered it.

The officer involved was not injured in the incident and was placed on administrative leave while the police department conducts a joint investigation with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office.

After the shooting, Jean was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A CBS 11 News crew spoke with Dallas police and they said the officer who fired her weapon had not been interviewed. "We will have a lot to do in this investigation".
