Pompeo slams Kerry for 'inappropriate' Iran meetings

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has accused his predecessor John Kerry of trying to undermine the Trump administration's Iran policy by meeting several times recently with the Iranian foreign minister, who was his main interlocutor in the 2015 nuclear deal negotiations.

Pompeo stopped short of calling Kerry's meetings a violation of FARA, saying he would "leave the legal determinations to others". And according to him, right, you don't have to take my word for it, he - these are his answers, he was talking to them.

Kerry met with Zarif while President Donald Trump took Iran out of the nuclear deal in May.

"Secretary Kerry ought not to engage in that kind of behavior", Pompeo said. "It's inconsistent with what the foreign policy of the United States is as directed by this president, and it is beyond inappropriate".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also said on Friday his Obama-era predecessor John Kerry has been "actively undermining" U.S. policy on Iran.

Authorities have advised people, however, to move to higher levels in their homes while they wait to be rescued. At least 150 people were waiting to be rescued in New Bern, N.C., officials tweeted Thursday evening.

The spokesperson cited Henry Kissinger, who served as secretary of state under Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, as having met "for decades with Russian Federation and China".

Kerry, in a radio interview with Fox News as part of a book tour, said he had met with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif "three or four times" since the end of his term in January 2017.

The law Trump invoked - the Foreign Agents Registration Act, or FARA - requires registration and transparency by people or companies acting on behalf of foreign governments, political parties or individuals.

Bill Maher began the interview by invoking the tweet the president made yesterday blasting Kerry for his various meetings with the Iranian government since leaving office.

In his tweet, Trump asked whether Kerry had complied with the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal previously reported on earlier drafts of the executive order. Then the two departments would have 45 days to determine whether action is required, Coats told reporters.

As of this writing, Kerry, who is now promoting his new book "Every Day is Extra", has not responded to Trump's or Pompeo's broadsides.

Trump withdrew the United States from the nuclear deal with Iran in May and his administration has pushed a hard line against Tehran as it moves to reimpose sanctions that were lifted after the deal.

Kerry's meetings do not appear to violate FARA, but some have suggested they could be in violation of the Logan Act, which prohibits private citizens from negotiating on behalf of the US government without authorization, though no one has ever been successfully prosecuted under the law.

"What did you do, John Kerry, that was BAD?" "He was the one that created this MESS in the first place!" "What I have done is tried to elicit from him what Iran might be willing to do in order to change the dynamic in the Middle East for the better".
