Alongside the UEFA champions League and the UEFA Europa League, the European Football authority plans to introduce a third European club competition from 2021.

"Pending approval of the UEFA ExCo, the "green light" has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021/22 season", Agnelli said.

In recent weeks, UEFA has said it is "constantly reviewing" its competitions and has been "discussing various ideas within its Club Competitions Committee before any decision on potential changes would be made".

"Pending approval of the UEFA executive committee, the "green light" has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021-22 season", Agnelli said.

When Lazio beat Mallorca 2-1 at Villa Park in Birmingham, England, in May 1999, the Roman side became the 39th and last winners of the European Cup Winners' Cup before the competition was abolished.

No details have been announced, but it is expected to run alongside the Champions League and the Europa League, although reports suggest the latter competition could be restructured.

The Cup Winners' Cup - for domestic cup champions - was scrapped in 1999.

The ECA has previously called for more clubs to be involved in European competitions and a "greater certainty of matches" for participating clubs.

All three subjects are part of FIFA-led talks to agree on a new worldwide calendar beyond 2024 - the year when widespread changes to soccer can take effect, Agnelli has said.

"The current model needs modernising", said Agnelli, 42.
