Wright To Play During Mets’ Final Homestand

With that in mind, Wright will forever be remembered as a key player in Mets history, and seeing him give his conference Thursday was rough.

Wright is now slated to start at third base for the Mets on Saturday, Sept. 29, and it sounds as though that start could mark the final game of a brilliant career that was unfortunately cut short by significant injuries.

He opened Thursday's press conference with a joke, laughing as he said, "This kind of caught me off guard - I thought we were going to announce an extension today".

The franchise's hits leader, Wright has not played in a major league game since 2016 due to neck and shoulder surgeries and his ongoing battle with spinal stenosis.

"It's truly been an honor to take the field with you, and serve as your captain", an emotional Wright said.

According to WFAN's Mike Francesa, the Mets will activate the veteran third baseman for their last homestand of the season. "To the fans: words can't express my gratitude and appreciation for always having my back".

Wright, a seven-time All-Star, spent the entirety of his 13-year career with the Mets, posting a cumulative slash line of.296/.376/.491 (112 OPS+) with 242 home runs, 390 doubles, and 196 stolen bases.

Wright has two more years and $27 million remaining after this season on the eight-year, $138 million contract he signed in November 2012. He earned $20 million this season, a portion of which the Mets have recouped via insurance while he's been on the disabled list.
